Data Sufficiency (Mainly Mains)

Introduction

Reasoning-section Data Sufficiency works exactly like its Quant counterpart — you judge whether given statements are enough to answer a question — but the statements here are logical/relational (rankings, arrangements, relationships) rather than numeric.

Standard Answer Choices

Q. Among five friends, who is the tallest?
I. A is taller than B and C.
II. D is taller than A, but shorter than E.
Statement I alone: A is taller than only B and C, doesn't rule out D or E → not sufficient. Statement II alone: D > A but D < E — doesn't tell us about B, C, or a definite tallest → not sufficient. Together: E > D > A > B, C. E is definitely the tallest → Option C.
⚠️ Key Insight: A statement giving only a partial/relative relationship (like "taller than some, but not all") is rarely sufficient alone — check whether it establishes a complete, unambiguous order before marking it sufficient.
💡 Exam Tip: Draw a quick relationship chain or mini-diagram for each statement separately — for logical Data Sufficiency, visualising is far more reliable than reasoning purely in your head.
