Core Terms

  • Marked Price (MP): The price displayed/listed on an item before discount
  • Discount: MP − SP
  • Discount is always calculated on Marked Price, NOT Cost Price

Core Formulas

QuantityFormula
Discount %(Discount / MP) × 100
SP from MP and Discount%SP = MP × (100 − Discount%)/100

Successive Discounts

Net discount % for two successive discounts a% and b% = a + b − (a×b)/100
💡 Example: Two successive discounts of 20% and 10% = 20 + 10 − (20×10)/100 = 30 − 2 = 28% net discount.

Key Trap

⚠️ Profit/Loss % is calculated on Cost Price; Discount % is calculated on Marked Price — mixing up the two bases is the most common error in this chapter.
