What Is E-mail?

E-mail (electronic mail) is a method of exchanging digital messages over a network. An email address is structured as username@domain (e.g., user@example.com).

Key E-mail Terms

Term	Meaning
CC (Carbon Copy)	Sends a copy to additional recipients; visible to all recipients
BCC (Blind Carbon Copy)	Sends a copy to additional recipients; hidden from other recipients
Spam	Unsolicited, unwanted bulk email
Attachment	A file sent along with an email

Protocol	Function
SMTP	Simple Mail Transfer Protocol — used to SEND email
POP3	Post Office Protocol — used to RECEIVE and download email to a local device
IMAP	Internet Message Access Protocol — used to access email while keeping it on the server
