What Is the Internet?

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers that communicate using a standard protocol suite called TCP/IP.

Key Terminology

Term	Meaning
WWW (World Wide Web)	A system of interlinked web pages accessed via the internet, invented by Tim Berners-Lee
URL	Uniform Resource Locator — the address of a web page
HTTP/HTTPS	HyperText Transfer Protocol (Secure) — the protocol used to transfer web pages
ISP	Internet Service Provider — the company providing internet access
Browser	Software used to access and view websites (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)

💡 The World Wide Web is NOT the same as the Internet — the Internet is the underlying network infrastructure; the Web is a service that runs on top of it.
