Introduction

Long before the organised nationalist movement, tribal communities and peasants across India rose up repeatedly against colonial land-revenue policy, forest restrictions, moneylender exploitation, and forced cultivation of cash crops. These movements — though localised and eventually suppressed — reveal the depth of resentment against colonial economic policy.
