Mathematical Operations

Symbol-substitution arithmetic — decode which operator each symbol represents, then solve using BODMAS.

What This Tests

Standard arithmetic symbols (+, −, ×, ÷) are replaced with unrelated symbols or letters. You must first decode which real operation each symbol stands for, then solve the expression using BODMAS.

Solving Approach

  • Note the given key exactly (e.g., "A means +", "B means ÷") before touching the expression
  • Rewrite the entire expression using real symbols first — don't try to calculate with the coded symbols directly
  • Apply BODMAS normally once the expression is fully decoded
💡 Example: If "P" means ×, "Q" means +, then "8 P 2 Q 4" becomes 8×2+4 = 20
⚠️ Some questions swap two operations (e.g., + means × and × means +) rather than using unrelated symbols — read the key carefully before assuming symbol meanings.
