What Is an Operating System?

An OS is system software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides common services for programs — acting as an interface between the user and the machine.

Functions of an OS

  • Process management — running and scheduling multiple programs
  • Memory management — allocating RAM to different programs
  • File management — organising data into files and folders
  • Device management — controlling input/output devices
